Como é que podemos iterar sobre strings de python quando strings não têm um__iter__ função?

E o mais importante (por mais que as strings sejam iteradas), por que as strings python não seguem a mesma convenção que tudo o resto. Especialmente quando os documentos do Python dizem que o__iter__ função é necessáriahttp://docs.python.org/library/functions.html#iter ?
