matplotlib e Qt: pressione o mouse event.key é sempre None

Incorporei uma figura matplotlib em um aplicativo Qt (PySide) e gostaria de responder a eventos de clique do mouse em combinação com teclas modificadoras (por exemplo, shift e controle). No código abaixo, usei o método canvas mpl_connect para conectar 'button_press_event' a um manipulador fictício que imprime o valor de event.key. Esse valor é sempre 'Nenhum' mesmo que eu pressione uma tecla modificadora durante o clique do mouse. Como posso obter o estado das chaves modificadoras em um manipulador de eventos do mouse matplotlib ao incorporar uma figura matplotlib em um aplicativo Qt?
