Resolvendo equações lineares e problemas semelhantes de álgebra com JavaScript

Eu sou novo em JavaScript e estou tentando escrever um script simples que resolve equações lineares. Até agora, meu script resolve equações lineares que são mais e menos apenas, como "2x + 28 - 18x = 36 - 4x + 10". Eu quero que ele também seja capaz de resolver problemas de equações lineares / álgebra que contenham multiplicação e divisão como "2x * 3x = 4 / 2x".

Eu meio que tenho uma idéia do que fazer a seguir, mas acho que o roteiro que tenho agora talvez seja excessivamente complexo e só vai tornar mais complicado adicionar multiplicação e divisão.

Abaixo está meu script. Eu estou esperando por algumas dicas sobre como eu poderia melhorar e simplificar o que eu já tenho e qual a melhor maneira de adicionar multiplicação e divisão?
