ApiException: 9003: PLACES_API_ACCESS_NOT_CONFIGURED

Estoy siguiendo el tutorial del lugar actual sobre:Seleccione el lugar actual y muestre los detalles en un mapa

Sigo recibiendo la siguiente excepción de tiempo de ejecución:

com.google.android.gms.common.api.ApiException: 9003: PLACES_API_ACCESS_NOT_CONFIGURED

He intentado los siguientes pasos:

Habilitar la API de Places en la consola de desarrolladoresUtilizando la guía de migración:Migración a los nuevos sitios SDK Client # Nuevos métodos para el nuevo SDK de Places, ya que este tutorial estaba usando un SDK de Places obsoleto, es decir, agregando la nueva dependencia.Agregar el siguiente código en mi archivo de manifiesto de Android

También estoy usando el SDK de Maps, que parece estar funcionando bien. Tanto el SDK de Maps como la API de Places están habilitados en la consola del desarrollador.
