O DocumentDB do Azure lança esporadicamente SocketException / GoneException

Descobri que uma reinicialização pode permitir a execução bem-sucedida do aplicativo Web no Visual Studio 2015 e atingi o terminal várias vezes. No entanto, quando eu interrompo o aplicativo e o reinicializo, ele provavelmente falhará. Em seguida, ele falhará repetidamente até eu reiniciar o computador. Reiniciar o VS'15 não é bom o suficiente.
Quando começa a falhar, a execução do aplicativo do VS Code ou da linha de comando com dotnet.exe exibe o mesmo comportamento.
POST ORIGINAL:
Temos um sistema de microsserviços configurado que chama uma coleção do DocumentDB de algumas APIs e funções do Azure. Falhaintermitentemente com umSocketException (GoneException aninhado dentro) do lado da API. Até onde sabemos, dado que funciona ocasionalmente, o código para chamá-lo está na maior parte correto. As funções do Azure funcionam sem problemas.
EDIT para esclarecimento: por "intermitentemente", quero dizer que funciona brevemente, talvez uma ou duas vezes por dia e, em seguida, entra em um estado de falha pelo resto do dia em que nenhuma chamada é realizada. Não é como 1 em cada 100 chamadas falhar. É mais como falhas sem fim após 1 ou 2 chamadas bem-sucedidas.
Consegui recriar a mesma exceção escrevendo um aplicativo de console simples para ler no DocumentDB e imprimir os resultados na saída Debug. Isso é executado uma ou duas vezes sem nenhum problema e, em seguida, começa a lançar a exceção abaixo sempre. Isso será feito algumas vezes por algumas horas, antes de permitir mais algumas ligações e depois lançar novamente.
Embora o testador abaixo seja primitivo, a API principal aproveita ao máximo a estrutura do projeto vNext. Ele usa um DocumentClient singleton para conectar (injetado via DI nativo) e é quase totalmente assíncrono do controlador até a camada de serviço que chama o banco de dados. Usamos uma biblioteca separada para gerenciar o acesso ao DocumentDB (criando coleções, se não existirem, adicionando métodos de extensão, operações simples de CRUD, etc.), mas chamar diretamente, como mostrado abaixo, produz os mesmos resultados.
Uma coisa que notei é que ele é bem-sucedido com muito mais frequência na versão Core do cliente DocumentDB ("Microsoft.Azure.DocumentDB.Core": "1.0.0") do que na versão net46. Nossa API precisa do 4.6 devido a outras bibliotecas.
Eu poderia recriar isso em várias máquinas, várias redes, vários tipos de conexão.
