ntem, eu estava trabalhando usando o MySQL instalado no meu computado
Eu baixei o xampp, então mudei emmy.cnf arquive o caminho para o soquete:

 /opt/lampp/var/mysql/mysql.sock  

Esse arquivo estava lá. Hoje eu queria continuar trabalhando nele e achei que o arquivo não estava mais lá, então estou recebendo o seguinte erro enquanto inicio o servidor mysql:

ERROR 2002 (HY000): 
Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket 
'/opt/lampp/var/mysql/mysql.sock' (2)

qui estão alguns testes que eu fiz:

mujeresponja@ubuntu:~$ ps -fea | grep mysqld
1000     15707 15615  0 16:28 pts/1    00:00:00 grep --color=auto mysqld
mujeresponja@ubuntu:~$ ps -fea | grep mysql

omo possível solução, desinstalei o xampp e o reinstalei, além de um novo servidor MySQL, apenas por precaução. De qualquer forma, esse arquivo não está mais lá.

EDITA Onde deveria estar o mysql.sock, existem dois arquivos mysql_upgrade_info (que contém apenas 5.5.8) e outro arquivo binário chamado ubuntu.err:
