Minimax explicou para um idiota

Eu perdi meu dia inteiro tentando usar o algoritmo minimax para criar uma IA de tictactoe imbatível. Perdi algo ao longo do caminho (frito no cérebro).

Não estou procurando código aqui, apenas uma explicação melhor de onde errei.

Aqui está o meu código atual (o método minimax sempre retorna 0 por algum motivo):
