onServiceConnected às vezes não é chamado após bindService em alguns dispositivos

Eu olhei para uma série de outros tópicos com títulos semelhantes, e nenhum parece cobrir o meu problema. Então aqui vai.

Estou usando a biblioteca de arquivos de expansão de mercado do Google (apkx) e o código de exemplo, com algumas modificações. Esse código depende do recebimento de retornos de chamada de um serviço que lida com downloads em segundo plano, verificações de licenças, etc.

Eu tenho um bug em que o serviço não é anexado corretamente, o que resulta em um bloqueio. Para tornar isso mais inútil, esse bug nunca acontece em alguns dispositivos, mas ocorre cerca de dois terços do tempo em outros dispositivos. Eu acredito que seja independente da versão do Android, certamente eu tenho dois dispositivos rodando 2.3.4, um dos quais (um Nexus S) não tem o problema, o outro (um HTC Evo 3D) faz.

Para tentar se conectar ao serviço, bindService é chamado e retorna true. OnBind então é chamado como esperado e retorna um valor sensato, mas (quando o bug ocorre) onServiceConnected não acontece (esperei 20 minutos apenas no caso).

Alguém mais viu algo assim? Se não, algum palpite sobre o que eu poderia ter feito para causar tal comportamento? Se ninguém tiver dúvidas, postarei algum código amanhã.

Ao adicionar este código, encontrei um pequeno bug. Corrigi-lo causou a frequência do problema que estou tentando resolver mudar de 2 vezes em 3 para cerca de 1 vez em 6 no telefone que estou testando; nenhuma ideia sobre efeitos em outros telefones. Isso continua a sugerir-me uma condição de corrida ou similar, mas não tenho ideia com o quê.
