Minha função de atualização retorna uma lista de tuplas do tipo(key, (value1, value2)) e todos eles são cadeias de caracteres, como visto abaixo:

EDITAR: O problema está nessas funções de 2 hbase, na linha e no put. Quando eu os comento, o código funciona (configurando o old_fi como um dicionário vazio), mas se um deles for executado, ele produzirá o erro acima. Eu uso o happybase para operar o hbase em python. Alguém pode me explicar o que está errado?
