Adicionando um recurso de histórico ao meu shell simples

Eu estou tentando adicionar um recurso de histórico para o shell e não sei como fazê-lo. O shell deve armazenar o comando e numerar o arquivo. Ele também deve ser capaz de recuperar os últimos 8 comandos para executar novamente. Por exemplo, se 35 comandos foram inseridos pelo usuário, 28-35 deve poder ser recuperado. O usuário deve poder ver os últimos 8 comandos digitando o histórico e executar um comando anterior digitando x num, em que num é o número do comando ou xr para executar o mais recente.
