É possível executar o serviço na plataforma Android continuamente, mesmo depois de bloquear o dispositivo?

Estamos trabalhando no desenvolvimento de serviços para a plataforma Android.

Em nosso serviço, precisamos enviar dados GPS (Lat e Long) do dispositivo para algum serviço REST externo a cada minuto.

Está funcionando bem por quase 15 minutos após o bloqueio do dispositivo. Mas depois disso ele não envia nenhum dado.

Depois de desbloquear o dispositivo, ele inicia novamente o envio de dados pelo serviço REST.
