Por que o G1GC encolhe a geração jovem antes de iniciar coleções mistas?

Quando o G1 decide que precisa começar a fazer coleções mistas, reduz de forma agressiva o espaço do Éden de 10g para cerca de 1g.

De acordo compágina 55 desta apresentação, ele precisa redimensionar o Eden para que o destino de pausa máxima seja responsável por todo o heap, não apenas pela nova geração. Por que o colecionador é tão agressivo?

Os tempos médios de pausa das gerações jovens estão entre 50 e 150 ms, para um tamanho de pilha de 10 g. Se a apresentação estiver correta (não encontrei mais nada para apoiar a declaração), esperaria diminuir pela metade (20 g de pilha), e não por 10.
