CFunited stuff

For some reason I have never blogged about my speaking assignement for the upcoming CFUnited conference. My session title is Attack of the Spam Bots - Banish Spammers, Keep Customers. I will not mince words, I am talking about alternatives to CAPTCHA, which is a serious detriment to website usability and accessibility. So if you are a fan of CAPTCHA, you should come to my session (if you are going to CFUnited). I will only spend about 5-10 minutes talking about CAPTCHA's downfalls, and the rest of the time will be devoted to awesome technology coolness, tools that will keep spammers away from your sites, without angering your users. :)

I'm not going to CFUnited, but I'm overjoyed that your topic is being presented - I detest CAPTCHA! It's a real shame the ability to add them so easily was added to CFIMAGE in CF8 - far too many people have put them in without understanding what they're doing.

Hi Jake,
I'm afraid I won't be able to make it to CFUnited this year either. I have other training commitments. I would have loved to have seen your presentation though. Hopefully you'll post it, or someone will blog it (someone will surely blog it. LOL)

Based on this topic, I'm interested to know if you've heard of a company called Vidoop (www.vidoop.com)? I caught a presentation by them at a TechEd event, or some other event, I can't remember. Anyway, they offer a really interesting alternative to CAPTCHA, but I don't know how good it is.

Kevin,

Yes, I have heard of Vidoop, they gave a presentation to my company (I didn't attend, but a co-worker told me about it). My impression was that it costs a lot of money for a simple task. I am a "Build don't buy" type of person. I am not going to build my own Database server, of course, but stopping spam is something I'd prefer to handle myself rather than paying a vendor lots of money to do it for me, and then I have to spend as much time or more building the integration with their service.

@Jake

Yeah, the whole concept seemed awfully over-complicated to me.
