CFEclipse Tip

Update: I've now added a video showing how to do split pane editing in CFEclipse (MPEG, 6.5 MB). The video is very compressed, to save download times (yes, there are still a few folks out there on dial-up).

One thing that HomeSite users often miss when they try CFEclipse is split pane editor windows (If you've been living under a rock, CFEclipse is an advanced ColdFusion IDE). They like being able to edit the same file from two different locations, with a split pane view of both. I always tell such folks that it's possible to do this. Just right click the suspect editor tab, and click 'New Editor'. This gives you a duplicate copy of the page you were editing in a new editor. You can then drag this down into the editor window, either to one side or to the bottom and it will create a split pane view. When you're done, just close the second editor (or minimize it if you'll need it later).

Something I found out today is that you can also duplicate the current editor by clicking Window->New Editor.

Great tip - I had no idea that was possible with cfeclipse. Granted I don't need it all that often but when I do, I really do.

Since CFEclipse is 'an advanced ColdFusion IDE', are you an Advanced ColdFusion Develoepr merely by using it? ;-)

I think Scott's got a point!

Say, think you could put a screenshot up, perhaps with some red circles around the different areas you're referring to or something like that? I use Eclipse about half the time (maybe I'm partially advanced, I dunno), but not enough to be intimately familiar with the names of the different areas. I just know where to click to do what I need to do right now. But with a PICTURE...THEN I'd be cooking with gas!

Thanks.

That was a good one, Scott. I suppose I deserved that, a bit. :) I know you were joking, but the reason I called CFEclipse Advance was because of it's tight integration with Ant, SCM systems, and it's general 'IDEness' when compared to the other CF development choices out there. Not to mention that with FusionDebug, you can now do killer interactive debugging in CFEclipse.

Doug,

Instead of a screenshot, I posted a video. The link's now up in the post.

Justin,

I just got finished moving my site to a new host. Lola made a couple of comments on my old host, and I can't seem to get them over here. Sorry Lola! I didn't delete them, there just over on another database, and it's too late in the day for me to mess with it more.

Anyway, Lola is also on a Mac, and she said she was able to get the video to play in mplayer and Real Player. I'm no video expert, but I do know I wanted to compress it. This is the best I could come up with.

Any chance you could get this video back up?

Oops, I don't know how that went missing...but I found it in a old backup of my blog. The link up there should work now. Thanks for the heads up!
